Urbanization:
A city is defined as "a dense and permanent concentration of people living in a limited geographic area who earn their living primarily through non-agricultural activities. Historically; cities did not develop until urbanization took place. Urbanization is defined as "the process by which an increasingly larger portion of the world s population lives in or near cities". Although cities developed in ancient and mid evil periods they did not contain such a high number of the population until later. The first cities to develop were known as "preindustrial" cities. They developed during a period in which agricultural was flourishing. There was a surplus of food for farmers to sell, causing portions of the population to migrate towards them. These type of cities (cities which develop because they serve a purpose and provide people with a means of survival) still exist today, however, they have evolved into what is known as the "modern city". The modern city developed following the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution put a focus on technology , commerce, and transportation, causing agriculture to fall to the wayside. Factories which would mass produce goods developed, causing large amounts of the populations to migrate into the city in search of jobs.
Overurbanization:
While cities are beneficial to those which it provides an occupation, it still has its downfalls. Cities may become over populated , causing over urbanization, a term which describes a city's inability to supply adequate jobs and housing to inhabitants.
Suburbanization:
While over-urbanization has occurred , sub-urbanization has also began to take place over the past few decades . Sub-Urbanization is defined as "central cities losing population to surrounding areas". As technology advanced, suburban was made possible because people could now live further away, but stay in touch with the city through advanced transportation, communication, and television. Suburbs have also grown in popularity due to the fact that they offer less crowding, less traffic, lower taxes, better schools and less crimes.
Central City Dilemma:
While Suburbanization provides what seems to be a better alternative to city life, it has caused what is known as the "central city dilemma", the concentration of a large population in need of services without the tax base to provide them. Due to cheaper costs and less population in the suburbs, many businesses and house retailers began to focus their attention in these areas, leaving conditions in the city to deteriorate. Most commonly, wealthy individuals moved to suburbans areas, followed by business owners, and all of the jobs which these businesses provided. As a result =, cities began to be populated by the poor, while suburbs began to be populated by the white and the wealthy.
